Total Joint Replacement

Total knee replacement surgery (total knee arthroplasty) or (TKA) is for individuals with pain resulting from degenerative joint disease, osteoarthritis, wear and tear, trauma, or a knee deformity. The damaged arthritic surfaces of the knee joint known as the femur, tibia, and possibly the patella, are replaced with metal and plastic components. These new components act as the joint surfaces, alleviating pain, and restoring function of the knee.

Total hip replacement surgery (total hip arthroplasty) or (THA) is for individuals with pain resulting from degenerative joint disease, osteoarthritis,  wear and tear, trauma, or a hip deformity.  The damaged arthritic surfaces of the hip joint known as the femur (ball) and the acetabulum (socket), are replaced with metal and plastic components. These new components act as the joint surfaces, alleviating pain, and restoring function of the hip.

Total shoulder replacement surgery (total shoulder arthroplasty) or (TSA) is an option for individuals with pain resulting from degenerative joint disease resulting from wear and tear, trauma, or a shoulder deformity. During surgery, the damaged or arthritic surfaces of the head of the humerus (ball) and the glenoid (socket) are replaced with metal and plastic components. These components act as the new joint surfaces to restore mobility and function of the hip.

Total ankle replacement surgery (Scandinavian Total Ankle Replacement) or (STAR) is for individuals with pain resulting from degenerative joint disease, osteoarthritis, wear and tear, trauma, or ankle deformity. The damaged or arthritic surfaces of the ankle known as the tibia and the talus are replaced with metal and plastic components. These new components act as the joint surfaces, alleviating pain, and restoring function of the ankle.
The majority of total joint replacement patients can expect good to excellent outcomes.  Most patients can return to low-impact sports like golf, biking, walking and hiking, swimming, and gentle skiing. In order to reach these goals, physical therapy is an important part of the process to regain range of motion, decrease swelling, increase strength, and restore full function of your new joint.

Vail Health is focused on making you, your family, or care partners comfortable with your choice to receive a total joint replacement by educating you and outlining expectations throughout this process. It is recommended that you view or attend our pre-op knee and hip class to prepare you with the necessary information before your procedure. It’s our to ensure you have an all-encompassing and excellent experience.
