Financial Counselor

Under the direction of the Manager, Financial Counseling, this role administers the Patient Financial Assistance policy. Activities include screening patients with and without insurance to determine financial means and assisting patients with obtaining financial sponsorship from external agencies and charitable programs when financial needs indicate. This position reviews applications for Financial Assistance, maintains monthly data reports, and arranges payment according to Vail Health guidelines. This role also acts as a mentor and trains new financial counselors.
- Following the Patient Financial Assistance Policy and the Hospital Discounted Care Bill, screens patients to determine eligibility.
- Refers patients to other government, county, and charitable programs as appropriate.
- Remains current on all programs available.
- Obtains and verifies patient financial information using the Financial Assistance Application form.
- Communicates in accordance with policy to patients whose applications are incomplete.
- Approves applications for up to the defined amounts, works with the Director of Patient Financial Services to approve additional amounts, and works with the Chief Executive Officer or Chief Financial Officer for approval above the defined maximum.
- Works with leadership to maintain monthly data including number of applications for financial assistance received, number of individuals granted financial assistance, number of appeals received, and percentage of appeals reviewed with a reversed decision.
- Keeps up to date with State Requirements related to the State of Colorado Required Charity Care and updates internal files accordingly.
- Attends regulatory required State Trainings, related to Hospital Discounted Care.
- Determines financial responsibility of patients.
- Assists patients/representative with education on payment plans.
- Counsels patients who cannot pay according to Vail Health payment schedule. Trains and mentors new hires on policies, procedures, and protocol.
- Role models the principles of a Just Culture and Organizational Values.
- Must be HIPAA compliant

- 2 years of financial counseling experience in a hospital or financial institution or equivalent experience, required.
- Previous hospital admissions or patient accounts office experience, preferred.
- Bilingual in English and Spanish, preferred.
- HBI Financial Counseling Certification, required

The posted salary range for this position applies to Colorado and may be adjusted based on geographic location.
