The Society of University Surgeons (SUS) has awarded Dr. Ernest "Gene" Moore its prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award. Each year since 2005, the Society has conferred this award on a single surgeon who has made substantial contributions to surgical science over the course of a full career. Previous winners include Frank G. Moody, Ben Eiseman, and Patricia K. Donohoe.

The awards committee cited Dr. Moore's decades-long tradition of research and mentorship, as well as his active involvement with the Society, including service on the executive council and a year as the Society's president in 1989.

Dr. Moore has spent his entire career at the University of Colorado Denver, where he has maintained an active research lab since 1976. With more than 1,500 publications to his credit, he has advanced the boundaries of surgical science in many areas, including trauma-induced coagulotherapy, multiple organ failure, and resuscitation with hemoglobin solutions.

Balancing a hard-working professional life with family time and athletic pursuits, Dr. Moore embodies the principles for which the Society of Academic Surgeons stands: unending curiosity, scientific thinking that is both critical and creative, and tireless work in the service of others.
