MyChart User Tip: Proxy Access: Managing Your Child’s Healthcare Online

Elevating Health

Managing your child’s healthcare is easier when you have the information you need at your fingertips. Vail Health’s new MyChart is a free, secure patient portal that helps families stay connected to their care teams, access health information, and manage appointments online.

With MyChart family access, also called proxy access, parents can use their own MyChart account to access certain information and help manage their child’s healthcare. The information available depends on your child’s age and Colorado privacy laws.

MyChart Access for Children Under 14

For parents of children younger than 14, proxy access makes it easier to stay on top of routine healthcare needs without juggling separate accounts. Through your own MyChart account, you can view your child’s test results and immunization records, message their care team, manage appointments and request prescription refills.

Getting started is simple. Log in to your account at VailHealth.org/MyChart, select Request Family Access from the main menu, and choose Request access to the account of a minor. Enter your child’s information and submit your request. Please allow up to 72 business hours for a response.

MyChart Access for Teens Ages 14–17

As children grow into teenagers, they begin taking a more active role in their healthcare. They also gain additional privacy protections under Colorado law. Parents can still request proxy access, but the information available is more limited.

With family access, parents of teens ages 14–17 can message their teen’s care team and view their immunization history. However, parents will not be able to view appointments or test results or complete eCheck-in through their proxy access.

Teens can also create their own MyChart accounts to take greater ownership of their healthcare. With their accounts, they can receive appointment reminders, complete eCheck-in, answer health questionnaires, access available health information and communicate with their care teams.

Encouraging your teen to use MyChart can help them become more comfortable managing appointments, communicating with healthcare providers and staying informed about their health.

What Happens When Your Child Turns 18?

When your child turns 18, your proxy access to their MyChart account ends. As an adult, your child can choose to grant you access to their account if they would like your continued help managing their healthcare.
