Born and raised in the San Francisco Bay area, Dr. Downey graduated from UC Berkeley with honors before moving to Colorado. After graduating from the University of Colorado School of Medicine, he completed his surgical residency at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in 1997. Dr. Downey is certified by the American Board of Surgery, a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and a member of the American Society of Breast Surgeons. In addition, he is an instructor in Advanced Trauma Life Support. He practiced in Boulder for nine years before being recruited to bring advanced laparoscopic and breast surgery techniques to the Vail Valley. Dr. Downey is actively involved in many committees and departments at Vail Valley Medical Center, and travels yearly as a team physician with the US Ski Team. He has special clinical interests in breast, endocrine, and minimally invasive surgery.

Dr. Downey lives in Eagle Ranch with his wife and three children. When not at work, he can usually be found on the course, on the river or on the slopes.
