En 1900, el estadounidense promedio consum\u00eda 4 libras de az\u00facar al a\u00f1o. El consumo promedio actual de az\u00facar en nuestro pa\u00eds es de unas astron\u00f3micas 150 a 170 libras por persona al a\u00f1o. Esta cruda realidad ha contribuido a una tasa de obesidad del 35,71 % entre los adultos. Casi un tercio de nuestros ni\u00f1os y adolescentes se consideran con sobrepeso u obesos, casi el triple de la tasa de la d\u00e9cada de 1960, lo que convierte a la obesidad infantil en la principal preocupaci\u00f3n de salud entre los padres estadounidenses. Adem\u00e1s, cada vez se reconoce m\u00e1s que el consumo excesivo de az\u00facar contribuye a un deterioro de la salud cognitiva.
