The Vail Breast Cancer Awareness Group's mission is to ease the financial and emotional burdens of women in Eagle County who are battling breast cancer. Since 1994, the Vail Breast Cancer Awareness Group (VBCAG) has raised significant funds for women through their signature event, the Celebration of Life Luncheon, as well as smaller events and initiatives. Shaw Cancer Center, and more specifically, Sonnenalp Breast Center and Jack's Place, have also been direct beneficiaries of the group's fundraising efforts.
In 2012, the VBCAG created The Gap Fund™ to help eligible patients with medical bills related to diagnostic services and genetic testing. Many women, although insured for their annual mammogram, do not follow through with additional diagnostic tests – if found to be necessary – due to their deductible or the additional payment that might be required. The Gap Fund helps women cover their cost of diagnostic breast imaging services including diagnostic mammography, diagnostic breast ultrasound, breast ultrasound biopsy, stereotactic breast biopsy, breast MRI biopsy, breast needle localizations, ductograms and cyst aspirations. The VBCAG donated $50,000 within their first year of establishing The Gap Fund.
Most recently, the VBCAG has helped fund a new 3D mammography machine for Sonnenalp Breast Center. 3D mammography is the most exciting advancement in breast cancer detection in over 30 years, showing breast tissue in very thin, clear layers – like pages in a book. This level of clarity makes it hard for breast cancer to hide – saving lives and reducing the need for follow-up imaging.
