HIM Coding Specialist II

Pay Grade: Min: $25.34 Max: $38.02 . Pay is based upon relevant education and experience 

POSITION PURPOSE:
The Medical Coder is responsible for ensuring correct pro fee medical coding by following ICD10-CM, CPT and HCPCS guidelines as well as company policy for a multi-specialty organization.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Initiates electronic transfer of signed off charts from the electronic health record into practice management in Allscripts PM and CM.
  2. Reviews and audits diagnosis codes using the appropriate classification system for ICD 10.
  3. Reviews and audits procedural notes and billing to ensure documentation supports the assigned code for in office procedures in a large variety of specialties.
  4. Confers with physicians and clinical assistants and other staff to assure complete, current, and accurate medical records.
  5. Completes other tasks and duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Certified Professional Coder (CPC) accreditation through AAPC required.
  • Five years or more previous medical coding / billing experience.
  • Proficient knowledge of CPT codes to include labs, ultrasounds, vaccines, medication injections, laceration repairs, lesion destructions, plus E/M visits, preventive medicine visits and in office procedures required.
  • Recognizes and reports unusual circumstances and/or information with possible risk factors to appropriate risk management and department leadership and reports problems, errors, and discrepancies in dictation and patient records to department leadership. 
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, human anatomy, HIPAA compliance and OSHA rules and regulations required.
  • Proficiency of 20 charts per hour with 95% accuracy expectation.
  • Displays strong verbal/written communication and organizational skills.
  • Professionalism and ability to be discreet with confidential and sensitive issues.
  • Ability to multitask and be detail oriented for a large volume of charts each day.
  • Ability to foster professional and productive relationships.
